Refinery Variable Spring Support

Refinery Variable Spring Support is engineered to provide a variable upward force that changes with pipe movement, allowing the system to absorb thermal growth while maintaining load stability. Refinery Variable Spring Support consists of a heavy-duty spring coil enclosed in a welded steel casing, with top and bottom load plates, travel stops, and preset locking pins. The spring is pre-compressed at the factory to the calculated cold load, and the locking pins restrain movement until after hydrostatic testing. This product is suitable for vertical travel up to 12 inches and load capacities up to 50,000 lbf. The load variation is limited to 25% or less, as specified by MSS SP-58 for variable supports. Material selection depends on the operating environment. Carbon steel ASTM A36 or A572 Gr.50 is standard for most refinery applications, while stainless steel 304/316 is recommended for chloride or sour service conditions. Spring coils are shot-peened and preset to reduce relaxation over time. Hot-dip galvanizing per ASTM A153 provides corrosion resistance in marine or humid environments, and a zinc-rich epoxy primer is suitable for insulated or buried piping systems.
For proper sizing, the vertical movement and total load are obtained from pipe stress analysis. The spring rate is chosen so that the load variation does not exceed 25% at full travel. The unit is factory preset to 50% of total travel, allowing balanced movement in both upward and downward directions. Load indicators and travel scales can be added for visual inspection during operation.
During installation, the support is positioned with the load flange centered on the pipe attachment. The locking pins must be removed only after the piping system has been fully hydrostatically tested and insulation is complete. Load and travel settings are verified against the pipe stress analysis report. Optional accessories include travel scales, load indicators, and stainless steel hardware for corrosive environments.
