Thermal-Efficient Pre-Insulated Pipe Supports For Heat Preservation And Quick Field Installation

If you’ve ever walked past a chilled water line on a humid day and noticed a wet patch around the pipe support, you’ve seen exactly what a pre-insulated pipe support is designed to prevent. At Tianshun, we make these supports for cold lines, cryogenic piping, and hot process lines where the insulation has to stay continuous right through the support point. Over 14 years, we’ve shipped them into LNG terminals, district cooling plants, food processing facilities, and anywhere else a cold pipe and ambient air meet.

A standard pipe shoe or pipe support works fine for uninsulated lines, but the moment you add insulation, you create a problem: the support point becomes a thermal bridge. On a cold line, that means condensation, ice buildup, and eventually corrosion. On a hot line, it’s a path for heat to leak straight into the structural steel. A pre-insulated pipe support solves this by embedding a rigid insulation block inside the support shoe itself — the pipe stays insulated, the load gets carried, and the dew point stays where it belongs.

Pre-Insulated Pipe Supports are not just insulation with a metal bracket around them. They are load‑bearing structural elements, and they have to handle the same weight, movement, and occasional shock loads as any pipe shoe. On vertical runs where the line also needs to absorb thermal movement, we often supply them alongside spring hangers or variable spring supports. On long horizontal racks, they work together with constant spring supports at critical tie‑in points, making sure the cold pipe is fully supported and fully insulated everywhere.

ANSI/MSS SP‑58 – Pipe Supports and Hangers

ASME B31.3 and B31.1 – Process and Power Piping

EN 13480 – Metallic Industrial Piping (where applicable)

GB/T 17116 – Chinese standard for pipe supports

Common Questions

Q1: How do I know what insulation thickness I need?

The insulation thickness of the support should match the pipe insulation thickness, or be slightly less (but not much) to avoid creating a gap. If your pipe has 80mm of foam glass, we’ll put at least 70‑80mm of insulation inside the shoe. The exact number depends on the thermal conductivity requirement and the surface condensation risk. Send us your insulation specification, and we’ll match it.

Q2: Can pre‑insulated pipe supports handle hot lines, or are they only for cold?

Both. They prevent heat loss on steam and hot oil lines just as well as they prevent condensation on cold lines. For high‑temperature applications above 200°C, we select insulation materials like mineral wool or calcium silicate that won’t degrade at elevated temperatures.

Q3: Are these supports field‑weldable, or do they come as a complete assembly?

Our pre‑insulated supports are typically supplied as a complete assembly ready to be welded or clamped onto the pipe. The insulation block is pre‑bonded into the steel saddle, and the vapor barrier is factory‑sealed. This saves a huge amount of field labor compared to building up an insulation box around a standard shoe on site.

Q4: Can you design a sliding pre‑insulated pipe support?

Yes. We bond a PTFE slide plate to the underside of the base plate, or provide a polished stainless steel surface. This lets the pipe move axially while staying fully insulated. We also offer guided versions with lateral stops, designed to your pipe stress movement requirements.

Q5: How do you ship these without damaging the insulation?

The insulation block is recessed inside the steel saddle and protected by the base plate. We also add temporary edge protection and pack each support in a wooden crate or on a pallet with foam padding around the insulation. We’ve shipped thousands of these to the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and condensation‑damaged insulation is not a problem we see.

Testing and Quality Assurance

Every pre‑insulated pipe support goes through checks that go beyond a dimensional inspection:

Compressive strength verification of the insulation batch

Water absorption test for closed‑cell foams (per ASTM C272 or similar)

Bond integrity between insulation and steel saddle (visual and mechanical tap test)

Dimensional check of saddle radius, base flatness, and bolt hole alignment

Vapor barrier continuity inspection

Load‑bearing test on full assembly for critical or prototype orders

Documentation includes material certificates for steel and insulation, a test summary, and a photo record of each tagged support before packing.

Customization We Provide

Pre‑insulated pipe supports are almost always custom. Some of the variations we’ve manufactured:

Oversized saddles for large‑diameter LNG pipe (up to 60")

Vertical riser supports with integrated insulation block

Anchor‑type pre‑insulated supports for fixed points

Fire‑resistant insulation (mineral wool or intumescent‑coated foam) for fire‑rated zones

Stainless steel saddle and hardware for coastal or offshore installations

Split‑shell design for retrofitting onto existing live lines without cutting

You don’t need to fit your insulation around our support. We’ll build the support around your insulation.

Things We’ve Learned From Real Installations

Always consider the vapor barrier. On cold lines, moisture will find its way into the insulation block if the seal isn’t perfect, and once the insulation is wet, its thermal performance drops off a cliff. We take extra care with edge sealing, and we recommend the site team inspect the barrier before and after welding.

In vertical piping, a pre‑insulated pipe support may need a different load‑transfer arrangement than a horizontal one. The insulation block carries the full weight in compression for horizontal lines, but for vertical lines, the support often needs a steel shear collar that engages through the insulation. We can include this in the design.

If the pipe will be hydrotested, consider that the pipe will be at ambient temperature during the test and may sweat. That’s normal, but it’s also the first time many site teams see condensation at the support. A note in the installation manual explaining this can save a lot of unnecessary queries.

When ordering, give us the pipe schedule, insulation type and thickness, and the design movement (if sliding). These three data points let us propose a technically sound design in the first quotation, without back‑and‑forth.

Why Tianshun for Pre‑Insulated Pipe Supports?

A pre‑insulated pipe support sits at the intersection of structural engineering and thermal design. Get either part wrong, and the support either fails mechanically or soaks up moisture and stops insulating. We’ve been getting both parts right for 14 years, and our factory in Yangzhou has the production line set up to build these efficiently — from cutting the steel saddle to bonding the insulation and sealing the vapor barrier.

Over 70% of our orders come from customers who tested us once and kept coming back. We ship pre‑insulated supports globally, often bundled with our pipe supports, spring hangers, and constant spring supports so the entire pipe support package arrives together, tagged and ready for installation.

If your next project has cold lines, cryogenic lines, or insulated hot lines that need proper thermal isolation at the support points, send us your insulation spec and pipe support list. We’ll work out a factory‑direct quotation with a clear delivery schedule. As always, you’re welcome to visit our factory and watch how we build and test these supports before they ship.
