A sway strut limits lateral movement of a pipe without restraining thermal expansion in the axial direction. In normal operation it accepts slow thermal displacement along the pipe run. When a side force appears — from wind, seismic acceleration, water hammer, rotating equipment vibration, or wave motion on a marine platform — the strut acts as a rigid member, holding the pipe in position and transmitting the load to the building structure or steel rack. This protects pipe welds, flanges, and connected equipment from fatigue damage and impact.


Because the strut can be set at any angle, it works across vertical, horizontal, and inclined installations. The adjustability of its length lets the site team fit it to the as-built gap between the pipe attachment and the structural anchor point, absorbing tolerances that drawings cannot always predict.

Construction and key features

High-strength steel body

The strut tube, end fittings, and hardware are fabricated from carbon steel or low-alloy steel selected for the load and temperature specified. Standard material certificates accompany each batch, confirming mechanical properties and chemical composition. For corrosive or marine environments, stainless steel grades are available.


Adjustable length for field accuracy

A telescoping or threaded adjustment mechanism allows the strut to be set to the exact installed length on site. Typical adjustment travel options are ±25 mm, ±50 mm, and ±100 mm. This adjustability means the strut can be installed without cutting or welding, and it compensates for minor misalignment between the pipe shoe and the structure.


Multiple end connection options

To suit different pipe attachment and structural interface arrangements, the strut can be supplied with ball joints, clevis ends, or threaded rod connections. Ball joints allow angular rotation and prevent bending moments from being introduced into the strut tube. Clevis ends provide a simple pinned connection for straightforward installations. Corrosion protection for long service life

Standard surface treatment is hot dip galvanizing, which provides uniform coverage inside and outside the tube. For enhanced protection, we offer high-build epoxy coatings, fusion bonded epoxy (FBE), and three-layer polyethylene (3PE) systems. The choice of coating is agreed based on the site atmospheric conditions and operating temperature.


Compliance with international standards

Sway struts are designed and manufactured in accordance with ASME B31.1 and B31.3 for process and power piping, MSS SP-58 for pipe supports, and GB/T standards. When the project specification requires alternative codes, we review the technical compatibility and supply to the applicable standard.

Frequently asked questions

How is a sway strut different from a rigid strut or a snubber?

A rigid strut locks all movement, including thermal expansion, which may overstress the pipe. A hydraulic snubber allows slow thermal movement and locks only under fast dynamic motion. A sway strut provides rigid lateral restraint in one plane while permitting axial thermal displacement, making it suitable for applications where the direction of thermal growth is known and the side load is predictable.


What temperature limit applies to the standard carbon steel strut?

Standard carbon steel struts with hot dip galvanized finish can operate up to approximately 350 °C. For higher temperatures up to 550 °C, we use alloy steel and high-temperature coatings or leave the body uncoated. The end connection components are also selected to suit the elevated temperature. We recommend sharing your actual pipe surface temperature during the enquiry so the correct material is chosen.


Can the sway strut be installed in any orientation?

Yes. The strut can be mounted vertically, horizontally, or at an angle. The ball joint end connections accommodate angular misalignment, and the adjustable length takes up site tolerances in any orientation. The only requirement is that the structure at both ends can carry the specified load.
