Why a constant load matters in high-load pipe support

When a High-load Constant Spring Hanger experiences large vertical displacement due to thermal expansion, a variable spring support changes its resisting force as the spring compresses or extends. This load variation can transfer unwanted stress into the pipe wall, connected equipment, and adjacent supports. A constant spring hanger eliminates this problem by delivering a virtually unchanged supporting force from the cold position to the hot operating position and everywhere in between.


The mechanism uses a compression spring acting through a crank and connecting rod assembly. The geometry is arranged so that the spring torque around the main pivot equals the load torque at every point in the stroke. The result is a support force that stays within a narrow deviation band regardless of how far the pipe moves vertically.

Standard models cover operating loads from 0.1 kN to 500 kN. For loads beyond 500 kN we engineer custom supports against client drawings and specifications. Load deviation is held to within ±5% of the rated value as standard, with a high precision option achieving ±3%. This tight tolerance is verified on our calibration bench before dispatch.


Stable structure for heavy vertical travel

The housing acts as a protective enclosure, keeping construction debris and site contamination away from the spring and linkage. Standard travels of 50 mm, 100 mm, 200 mm, and 400 mm are available, and actual travel up to 600 mm can be supplied when the piping layout demands it. Upper and lower travel limit stops are integrated to prevent overtravel in either direction, and a visible travel scale lets installation teams confirm position at any time.


Spring materials selected for long fatigue life

Spring coils are wound from 60Si2Mn or 50CrVA steel, both chosen for their high fatigue strength and consistent performance over years of thermal cycling. The combination of good material and controlled coiling processes supports the stable load output and long service intervals expected in power and process plants.


Field adjustable without guesswork

A load adjusting screw allows the support force to be fine tuned on site. Turning the screw in the marked direction increases or decreases the load in 2% increments, with a total adjustment range of ±10% to ±20% depending on the model. A dial adjacent to the screw reads the adjustment directly, so the fitter can dial in the required setting without removing the unit or using external load cells.


Preset pins that simplify installation and hydrotesting

Every constant spring hanger leaves the factory with red preset pins set to the cold installation position specified by the client. The pins lock the mechanism so the piping system can be hydrostatically tested or chemically cleaned without further deflection of the spring assembly. Our standard pins are designed to hold up to twice the rated operating load during testing. If higher test loads are anticipated, we reinforce the pin assembly once informed at the order stage. The pins must be removed before system commissioning.


Quality control and traceability

Our quality system is certified to ISO 9001:2015. Each constant spring hanger is assembled and preset to the client specified load and travel on a calibrated test stand. We record the load at multiple positions across the stroke to confirm that the deviation remains within the specified tolerance. These test records are retained and can be supplied with the shipment.


Material certifications for the spring coils, structural steel, and fasteners are traceable to the mill. For projects that require compliance with ASME B31.1, B31.3, EN 13480, or other international codes, we provide the necessary documentation packages, including weld procedure qualifications and NDT reports when applicable.


Where High Capacity Constant Spring Hangers are applied

These supports are installed wherever a pipe system sees large vertical displacement and cannot tolerate changing support forces. Typical installations include main steam lines in thermal and nuclear power plants, hot reheat piping, boiler feedwater risers, and high temperature process piping in refineries and chemical plants. How does a constant spring hanger differ from a variable spring support?

A variable spring support changes its load as the spring deflects, which means the pipe feels a different force in the cold and hot states. A constant spring hanger is designed so that the support force stays almost the same throughout the entire stroke. This prevents load variation from transferring stress into the pipe system, which is especially important on critical lines with large vertical movement.


Can Tianshun manufacture hangers rated above 500 kN?

Yes. We treat high capacity supports as custom engineered orders. You can send us the design drawings or specify the load, travel, end connections, and applicable code. Our engineering team will design the hanger accordingly and provide approval drawings before manufacture.


What is the purpose of the red preset pins, and when should they be removed?

The preset pins lock the hanger at the cold installation position. They keep the mechanism rigid so that the pipe system can be filled, hydrotested, or chemically cleaned without the spring moving. The pins must be removed only after all testing is complete and before the system is commissioned for normal operation. Leaving them in place during operation would prevent the hanger from functioning.


What international standards can you work to?

We routinely supply constant spring hangers to GB/T 17116.1, NB/T 47039, MSS SP-58, ASME B31.1/B31.3, EN 13480-3, VGB-R 510 L, and JIS B 8501. If your project requires a different standard, please send us the specification and we will confirm compliance.


Can the housing finish be adapted for corrosive or offshore environments?

Our standard finishes are hot dip galvanized and epoxy painted. For highly corrosive atmospheres we can apply specialised coating systems or fabricate the housing from stainless steel. Please specify the environmental conditions with your enquiry so we can propose a suitable protective system.


What are your payment terms and typical delivery times?

We accept payment by wire transfer. Delivery times depend on the order quantity and the complexity of the custom settings, but standard constant spring hangers can typically be manufactured and preset within four to six weeks from order confirmation.
